Nina Hooper Looking at Landcare - 16 September 2011

Hello Landcarers

The wash up of the Forum is here, so many of us in local Landcare have been working on various aspects of this. At the end of last week we held a debrief going through each part of the forum and covering the good and the not so good bits. Our plan was to put together some recommendations for the next forum that will be held in 2013 in the Hunter Valley – this time being hosted by the Catchment Management Authority there.

Looking at Landcare - Eco Day, Tree Day, State Landcare Catchment Management Forum

Nina Hooper Looking at Landcare - 5 August 2011

Hello Landcarers

Last week was a sad one for us all at Parkes and Districts Landcare, though we hope that the success of the events we ran as part of National Tree Day Celebrations was a fitting tribute to our friend Gerald Carnie and his passion for Landcare.

It is with great sadness that I broadcast the passing of Gerald Carnie our friend and colleague. Gerald passes away last Saturday after surcuming to sudden illness. Gerald was the salvation of landcare he was a creative and an ideas man that put those ideas into action through Parkes and Districts Landcare and Lachlandcare He came up with the name Lachlandcare, the concept of the enviroHUB, the change in format of our AGM, reinvigorated our website, was a key organizer of the upcoming forum, sought out many projects and processed grant applications that brought funding to these projects, contributed greatly to the relocation of the office to the former Tourist Centre at Kelly Reserve. He was a great networker not only within landcare at regional, State and National level but with others organizations such as the local councils, government organizations, companies and businesses both local and far afield. He would say to me that he had this thought at some unbelievable hour of the morning when one should be sleeping of a plan to put Landcare at the forefront. He had a passion for Landcare.

Update on the field trip to Bruie Plains.
This was a success but not many people turned up. We had a great day sitting on the bus touring the Bruie Plains area (near Trundle) looking at some of the works they’ve done in the past by the Bruie Plains landcare Group. These works included fenced waterways for erosion control, tree corridors for wind erosion and stock protection these tree corridors also provided biodiversity connectivity. There was a wetlands to reduce downstream erosion to improve water quality and provide riparian and aquatic habitat.
