Looking At Landcare - CMA Open Office Day, CMA CAP Survey, School Excursions, NRM Working Group, Bill Archer

Nina Hooper Looking at Landcare - 9 December 2011

Hello Landcarers

Hope that those of you who are still harvesting have managed to avoid bogs and breakdowns – it’s an interesting time of year isn’t it?

Even though it is getting close to the end of the year, there is still environmental activity going on.

This week Landcarers were involved in attending the Lachlan CMA open office days. Though the crowds were not huge, it was good to be able to contribute to the beginnings of the Catchment Action Plan – or CAP – for the Lachlan Catchment. For those of you who would still like to be part of the CAP, you will get your chance.

There is a short survey that is available in hard copy from CMA offices or on the website at www.lachlan.cma.nsw.gov.au that will enable you to have your issues captured. Make sure that you do have a say, as the CAP is the guiding document for CMAs to decide where money and effort is placed in the catchment. If you think your area is important, you need to complete this survey.

Landcarers are also involved in a couple of school excursions this week and next. Holy Family School in Parkes has Year one and two students heading to various environmental sites around Forbes and one of the speakers on the day will be Ron Hurley from Forbes Urban Landcare.

Next week there will be another excursion for Holy Family kindy kids – and there Gary and Georgie Brennand will be teaching the kids all about growing native tree seeds – they will even get a pot to keep!

Chairperson Margot Jolly has also recently attended the meeting of the Central West NRM working group. The Natural Resource Management (NRM) Working Group was formed to provide an important link between the Central West CMA and the many Landcare and community groups it works with throughout the catchment. Any NRM focused community group is welcome to be involved in the NRM Working Group.

The NRM Working Group members play a major role in the development of projects and initiatives within the catchment. Representatives from across the catchment meet quarterly to give and receive feedback, network, develop projects, inform, advise and consult with one another. They represent Landcare and other environmental and sustainable agriculture focused networks in the central west catchment and build NRM partnerships in collaboration with the Central West CMA and other stakeholders.

And finally this week a picture of one of our great local Landcarers, Bill Archer, who is unwell in hospital at the moment.

Bill ArcherThis picture shows Bill at National Tree Day - this event happens on the last day of July every year. It is a great family day and it’s an easy activity for even the smallest kids to participate in. Mark it in your 2012 diaries now!

Until next week, happy Landcaring!
