Looking At Landcare - Bill Archer, Gerald Carnie Scholarship Fund, Central West Lachlan Landcare, National Parks Association

Nina Hooper Looking at Landcare - 2 December 2011

Hello Landcarers

Can you believe that we are in December? Seems like just the other day we were going though January – I’m sure it’s not just that we are all getting old! I hope for those of you who are going through harvest that the rain stays away now for while so that the job can be done.

Id like to start this week with a shout out to Bill and to wish him all the best. He really is such an invaluable member of our team at Landcare, so we are all thinking of him.

In other news I’m sure that all of our members would be interested in the fact that the Committee, with some savings from the Forum we held in September, are planning to establish a Scholarship Fund in the name of Gerald Carnie, our Landcare Facilitator, who passed away in July this year.

Gerald had such enthusiasm for Landcare and the community and for learning, so we are planning to make this scholarship something that would be available for people undertaking environmental studies. This may be someone going though a degree or a certificate course.

We will be working hard to secure ongoing funds for this award so that there are a lot of fresh faces out their studying the environment, knowing about Gerald and his legacy. Back Yamma Landcare is also keen to support this award and we will keep you all posted with the direction we take.

Other things coming up include the rebadging of Parkes and Districts Landcare into Central West Lachlan Landcare. Our website has had some changes made to reflect the new name but we really are in a transition mode with much of our communications. We will keep you updated on progress but in the meantime please bear with us! Committee member Sarah Gillogly will be lending us her marketing skills so that everyone will know about our facelift!

Dates for the diary this week include the Lachlan CMA Open days. In Parkes and Forbes the offices will be open for a chat and some light refreshments on the 6th December. Come along and say Gday – some of us you already know! Look forward to seeing some of you in the Parkes office – between 10am and 3pm.

Our good friends in the local branch of the National Parks Association have their Christmas Party coming up on the 4th of December. Head out to Bumberry Dam and enjoy a pleasant walk followed by a party – don’t forget to bring your own supplies. These are a great group that do lots of interesting walks throughout the district. Many of the members are also very skilled in the area of flora and fauna, so you are sure to learn a lot from them. If you are interested in the NPA, contact Martin Bell on 0429 346 586 for details.

Until next week Happy Landcaring!
