Looking At Landcare - AGM, Central West Lachlan Landcare, Lachlan CMA, Wetlands

Nina Hooper Looking at Landcare - 25 November 2011

Hello Landcarers

We had a great AGM last week with a brand new – well newish in some cases – committee for Central West Lachlan Landcare. Yes we have had a name change to better reflect the area covered by our organisation, so in the very near future we will be doing some re-badging of our website and other paraphernalia.

The new Committee will be headed by new Chairperson Margot Jolly. Margot has been on the Committee for a little while now and brings some great strategic skills to the position. Bill Archer will be in the Vice Chairperson position and Margaret Haddin, our former Chair will take on the Treasurer role. Margaret I am sure will be relishing this role after over seven years as chair.

This has been a challenging seven years, with a drop to part time staff and less funding, years of drought and other issues, so we would really like to acknowledge the hard work that Margaret has put into keeping Parkes and Districts Landcare – you know I mean Central West Lachlan Landcare – afloat.

Other Committee members include Joanne Hodges, Lorraine Carnie, Gavin Tom and myself as well as an associate member Sarah Gillogly who will be helping us out with youth and marketing strategies. It is especially great for us to have Lorraine on the Committee so that she can help us to keep her late husband Gerald’s legacy going.

Those of you readers who have yet to attend a Kids Teaching Kids Conference have a golden opportunity to see some of our local KTK stars in action. Corinella Public School and Forbes North Public School are just back from the Adelaide KTK conference and will be presenting their Kids Teaching Kids sessions at the Forbes North School on Tuesday the 29th November. For a gold coin donation you will get to see the fabulous creativity and passion of these kids! The session starts at 630pm and to book you need to contact 02 6852 2187. Come along and be reassured that the environment is in good hands.

Come and join the Lachlan CMA for some light refreshments as they host Office Open days throughout the catchment in early December. Meet your local staff and gain a greater understanding of the role of the Lachlan CMA. Get involved in the Catchment Action Planning (CAP) process and up-to-date on local activities and share your thoughts and ideas for future projects. In Forbes and Parkes the Open Office Day will be held on the 6th December from 10am to 3pm. Contact 1800 885 747 or email lachlan@cma.nsw.gov.au for further information.

Are you into wetlands? The Lachlan CMA has support available for projects that will address identified key threats to the Lower Lachlan High Ecological Value Aquatic Ecosystem (HEVAE).

If your property falls within the Lower Lachlan HEVAE, you may be eligible for assistance to implement a plan to manage the wetland. Lachlan CMA staff are available to help you assess the condition of any wetlands on your property. They can visit your farm and help you develop a plan to manage your wetlands for improved production and environmental outcomes. Contact the Lachlan CMA office in Hillston on 6967 2897 to find out more.

If you would like more information on the activities of Central West Lachlan Landcare please head to the website on www.parkeslandcare.org.au or check us out on Facebook or Twitter.

Until next week, happy Landcaring and get well soon Bill!
