Looking at Landcare 4th June

Hello Landcarers.
Great to see some nice rain over the last week – though we didn’t get huge amounts, it’s good to see that things are staying moist.
A lot going on in the world of Landcare and amongst this is a meeting of the Landcare committee at the office in Parkes.
The new meeting format is working well and the busy people that make up the committee are able to go back out into their real lives without having to give up too much time.
Among the things that we will be discussing today is the participation of the Forbes Urban Landcare group in the National Landcare Awards soon.
We are of course really barracking hard for Len and his team and as per the state awards there is also a people’s choice category.
The Peoples Choice Award is now open and will close on the 23rd June – make sure you go online and vote!!
Head to www.landcareonline.com.au and tell your family and friends to have a go too!
Of course we are sure that Forbes Urban will take out their own category, but it would be great to clean up in the Peoples Choice Category!
Speaking of Forbes, things are well underway for planning of the Schools Eco Day to be held at the Central West Livestock Exchange on the 30th July.
Thanks to the efforts of vice Chairman and National Tree Day Co-ordinator Bill Archer, we have all the local schools excited, and I have managed to tee up a really fun sounding series of activities and educators to fill up the day.
Thanks to the days sponsors Lachlan CMA and the Forbes Shire Council.
Landholders in the Trundle area are looking forward to a series of days in late June (28th, 29th and 30th), looking at the use of soil pits as a diagnostic tool, with soils consultant David McKenzie.
If you are interested in coming along on any of the days – or all of them – give me a call on 0447 452362.
Soils are always interesting and there is so much we don’t know about issues such as soil biology – everyone is sure to get something great out of these days.
The Coobang Landcare Group met last week to have a trip around some of their erosion sites where works are planned, with Andy White from the Soil Con and representatives from Parkes Shire Council.
This was followed by a social barbeque – something us here in Landcare do very well.
Its great to see this group pursuing this project that is at a large scale, but you have to start somewhere.
The Forum Committee will also be meeting soon to move the program forward.
Though this event is a way off there is plenty that can be actioned now, and the committee is only going to get busier.
Don’t forget that the play “Burnt” is on around the area next week – Tuesday night in Parkes and Thursday in Forbes – in both cases at 7pm at the High School Halls.
Should be great and see you there.
Until next week Happy Landcaring.
