Looking at Landcare 2nd April 2010

Hello Landcarers.
Within the next few days Landcarers will be receiving invitations to a social evening to be held in Parkes on the 20th of April.
We have long held the idea that a big benefit of being involved in Landcare is the “human interaction” so to speak, so with that in mind we have set up a little soiree for those of you who might like to attend.
The idea is to spend some time chatting and enjoying some drinks and nibblies, but also to hear from a couple of interesting guest speakers – namely Anne Williams - who is the chair of the Conservation and No Till Farming Association (who will be speaking on her pHD work on organic additions to a no till system) and Ian Packer of the Lachlan CMA, who will be talking about soil carbon – what is it and how do I get it.
The theme for the evening is casual, casual – but places are very limited so if you want to attend you will have to book with me very soon on 0447452362.
Look forward to seeing you there.
A great idea popped across my desk this week courtesy of Nina Crawford at Forbes.
Nina is a long term environmental activist in the district, whom many of you would know and is the moderator for the new Forbes FreeCycle Group.
Free Cycle is a great concept – it’s essentially like EBay without any money changing hands, and the Forbes Group is part of a world wide network, whose aim is to keep useful things out of Landfill and get them to people who can use them.
We all know that landfill space is going to be a huge issue into the future – and we also all know that too much is thrown away these days.
It’s all online – so head to www.freecycle.org and look for the links to the Forbes group.
Think about what you have at home that you can’t quite bear to throw out – toys, plants, clothes, bikes, furniture, appliances, gardening tools and construction materials.
A great way to clean out the shed too – and give yourself a warm fuzzy feeling at the same time.
Great work to Nina and her team.
The Parkes and Districts Landcare committee meets next week the 9th of April at the Landcare office from 9am.
We will also be having a forum organising committee meeting afterwards, to progress that event.
If you have any ideas that you would like raised at the committee meetings then please get in touch with Gerald on 0428 743846.
A thankyou too to all of the schools in the smaller towns and villages who got back to vice chair Bill on the combined schools grants.
We hope to be doing lots more work with the schools in future, so it is good to see that there is some enthusiasm for good environmental works.
A reminder to the schools too that these small grants are coming up all the time – so if you do have other ideas, keep a record.
The NSW Environmental Trust has just opened too and it also contains a category for Eco Schools – more on that next week – but keep an eye out.
Until next week, Happy Easter and Happy Landcaring.
