Looking at Landcare 16th April 2010

Hello Landcarers.
Hope that some of you at least are managing to keep those pesky grasshoppers at bay – isnt it frustrating that just when the season starts to look good, something like this goes and happens?
All the more reason for some relaxing before the serious part of sowing starts, so do come along to the Social evening with soils Landcare and the Lachlan CMA will be hosting at the Services club next Tuesday night.
The idea is to have a few drinks and nibblies and have a yarn or two and also to hear from a couple of great guest speakers – Ian Packer on Soils, and Anne Williams who is the chair of the Conservation and No till farmers Association – who is also doing a realy interest phd on Organic additives to a no till system.
It promises to be a great evening – but you will need to book for catering purposes to me on 0447 452362 before Monday.
Hope to see you there – but hurry, places are filling fast.
The Landcare committee met recently and as usual the meeting was very lively.
There are some great things happening at the moment with both the Forbes and Parkes Councils so stay tuned for those – it is great to see those particulr partnerships working so well together.
Those of you who are interested in seeing grazing management in action and don’t mind a bus trip will be thrilled to hear that the Lachlan CMA has another coming up on the 5th and 6th of May.
This one will visit the Wellington area and farms such as Norm and Pip Smith at “Glenwood” Wellington – to see the imapct of planned garzing on winner and summer perennials, lowering worm burdens and the incidence of fly strike.
The trip wil also head to Eric Harvey at Guerie – to look at pasture cropping and bioloigcal farming and to Bruce Maynards at Narromine to look at no kill cropping, saltbush plantings and extensive tree plantings.
The trip will be a great one for mixed farmers and at $40 for two days all inclsuive – it’s a real bargain.
Give me a call on 0447452362 if you would like to book in.
This Friday the Cooks Myalls Landcare group west of Parkes will be holding another of their sub- tropical grass field days.
This group is doing some great stuff in this area, and who knows, in this era of climate change, these could be just the species we will need to be looking at.
The field day will commence at 1pm at Chris Coles property “Kulgarnie” - and if you need directions feel free to contact Glen Woods on 68643224.
The day will also end with a bbq and will be very family focussed, which is a real strength of the Cooks Myalls group.
Until next week – Happy Landcaring and get on the phone and make your bookings now!
