A summary of news and events happening in the Parkes and Districts Landcare area in the upcoming weeks.

Funding Available

Parkes and District Landcare have been advised by the Central West CMA that funding is available for its Woodland Restoration Program. The program is aimed at helping landholders to protect and rehabilitate remnant woodland vegetation. Under the program, landholders can receive financial and technical support to implement projects which improve grazing management of native grasslands or protect remnant woodlands for conservation purposes.

Two funding packages are available to landholders under this program, these include:

1. Woodland grazing management package, this is designed to support landholders wishing to improve native grasslands through rotational grazing practices. Funding is available for, stock proof fencing, new watering points and grazing management payment.

2. Woodland conservation management package, this package is designed to support landholders wishing to manage remnant woodland areas for conservation purposes. Funding is available for, stock proof fencing, alternative stock watering points and conservation management.

Tullamore, Alectown, Tottenham and Peakhill are in the targeted area for this incentive program. The area covered for the program includes from Tomingley, Tottenham to the North, and Bobadah to the West, Alectown to the South and Sofala to the East. The program is targeting woodland vegetation including derived native grasslands such as Mallee, Ironbark, Box, Gum, Pine woodland and vegetation along creeks and rivers.

If landholders are interested they can submit an expression of interest (EOI) which will be open from 5th July 2010 and will close when allocated funding is expended.

Schools Eco Day

Schools are invited to nominate a team to participate in a day filled with fun, and hands-on environmental activities.

Learning about their natural surroundings and the environments is important for children.This ensures the next generation is able to care for the country in a way it needs. School Eco Day will provide the children with knowledge and experiences they wont forget.

Activities and experiences to be offered include:

Learning about native animals with Western Plains Zoo,

Checking water bugs with Lachlan CMA,

Tree planting with Landcare,

Making a worm farm with Netwaste,

Using a GPS with the Rural Fire Service,

Understanding Wiradjuri links to the land,

Nature and weed walks.

Schools Eco Day will be held at the Central West Livestock Exchange, Forbes on Friday 30th July. Bus travel, lunch and activities for your schools team are funded by the event sponsors. Caring for our Country Community Action Grants – NEW FUNDING ROUND OPEN!!

The Australian Government has announced up to $8 million in additional funds to help community groups protect the environment and support sustainable farming through its 2010-11 Caring for our Country Community Action Grants program. The applicant guidelines and application form will be available from Tuesday 6th July 2010 at www.nrm.gov.au or by calling 1800 552 008. Applications will close 31st August 2010.

Grasslands Conference

This years Grassland Society of NSW Conference is to be held on the 28th – 29th July at the Dubbo RSL Club. The theme for the conference is “Adapting Mixed Farms to Future Environments”. Conservation Farmer of the Year

Nominations for the Conservation Farmer of the Year are now open. All Central West, Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Murray Catchment farmers are eligible to enter the competition or be nominated by another farmer or extension officer. Winners of this unique and notable award receive $5000 to put towards personal development in conservation agriculture. The Award recognises the winner’s ability to farm in an environmentally sustainable and profitable fashion and also recognises their willingness to contribute to the well-being of the local and greater farming community. These winners will act as finalists for the Conservation Farmer of the Year, which will be announced at the Annual Conference Dinner on 16th September, 2010 in Wagga Wagga. Nominations close Friday 23rd July, 2010.
